Three More Spammers Canned

By David Utter

Federal prosecutors in Phoenix have won indictments against three people accused of violating the CAN-SPAM Act.

Run a massive spam ring, enjoy the attention of federal agents and attorneys. That's the reality for James Schaffer, Jeffrey Kilbride, and Jennifer Clason, each charged last week with two counts of fraud and a count of criminal conspiracy, an AP story reports.

Messr. Schaffer and Kilbride further garnered charges of transportation of obscene material using a computer service and one count of money laundering each. The federal government takes a very dim view of money laundering, and statutes provide for jail terms of potentially 20 years for committing that crime.

AOL appears to have a part in these indictments. According to the story, a four-month period last year generated 600,000 complaints to the services provider, allegedly driven by the spam activities of the accused.

Some of the case might hinge on the testimony of a former co-conspirator named Andrew Ellifson, who pled guilty to spamming and criminal conspiracy in February. AP notes his plea was unsealed in federal court last week, detailing his role in establishing the spam network.
